I’m excited to be sharing that Marissa Meyer will be guest posting here on the 28th December and sharing how she cast her magic with the characters in Cinder!
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publisher: Puffin Books
Published: 5th January 2012
ISBN: 9780141340135
Rating 5/5
The cover on this might appeal to those who enjoy girly shoes….the visual aid of the leg overlaid with cyborg type mechanics inside is what I like, rather than the shiny red high heels!! (Personally I like the ARC cover a lot better – which has cyan steampunk type scroll framed border and then fancy lettering rather than art work).
This is from a debut author, and is the first in a quartet of futuristic fairy tales known as The Lunar Chronicles.
Cinder is a fast paced, dazzling story of a girl/cyborg, who manages to attract attention from royalty without meaning to, and as her species is considered disposable, her family send her to be experimented on in the hopes of finding a cure for a terminal disease which one of her siblings contracts. The plot is really ingenious, and offers a new meaning to Cinderella and her family. It has some twists to the plot, and although the ARC is over 350 pages, I read it in one sitting as I couldn’t get enough of it.
My favourite character is hard to pin down, as they all have their merits…I thoroughly disliked Cinder’s “mum” though! She’s really good at being cruel and defines the wicked step mother role.
I would have given this a 5/5 with merits rating had it not been for the feeling of not having a complete ending such as Cinderella does….the ending in Cinder is full of hope, aspirations and chances for Cinder…but no real romantic ties were complete - whether or not this gets built on in the second of the series is something that may be interesting - or it may be that they are separate completely. Either way, this is a series I’ll be reading!
Here’s a quick peek at the book trailer (which is exclusively at Entertainment Weekly at time of writing) http://shelf-life.ew.com/2011/12/20/cinder-book-trailer-marissa-meyer-exclusive/
