Interview with Felicity Heaton

I’m delighted to welcome Felicity Heaton here today to tell us more about her recent release, Heart of Darkness.

Book Synopsis:
Heart of Darkness
A vampire prince on a four hundred year old mission to avenge his murdered sister...

Aleksandr Nemov won’t stop until the last of the vampire hunter’s progeny is wiped from the Earth. Each kill has stolen a piece of his humanity, pushing him towards the black abyss all vampires hold within their hearts. Now he is teetering on the edge, close to devolving into a beast, and time is running out as he tracks the last hunter to Prague. There he finds a beautiful woman who could be his one chance for salvation, but is it already too late for him?

A vampire guard who will do whatever it takes to protect those she loves...

Elise is dedicated to her duty. It’s the only thing she has left. All that changes when she meets Aleksandr in Prague and her master grants him permission to stay at her bloodline’s mansion. She knows all about Aleksandr but none of it prepares her for how she feels when the legendary prince’s hunt becomes one for her heart. Elise battles him with all of her strength but can she stop herself from falling for the handsome hunter? When he reveals the depth of the corruption in his soul, will she have the strength to face the pain in her past and do whatever it takes to save him?

Aleksandr sounds like an unforgiving vampire with no room for love.  Can you give an insight into why he has been hell bent on the revenge of his sister for four hundred years?
Aleksandr may sound unforgiving and I suppose in a way he is, but it’s his love for his sister that caused his deep desire to avenge her by killing not only her murderer but that vampire hunter’s entire family line. Aleksandr is the eldest son of the Nemov bloodline, who are the rulers of the vampire nation in Europe. He was the heir prince until he renounced that title and broke ties with his family in order to protect them from being stained by the blood he was determined to spill. The Nemov bloodline lead vampires towards humanity by preaching pacifism and teaching their people to limit their kills. What Aleksandr intended to do went against that ideal completely.

Because his family teach pacifism, his younger sister had never learned to fight because there was no need for her to know such things, much like most of us don’t have a need to know how to kill or defend ourselves. Aleksandr tried to save her from the vampire hunter when the palace came under attack but failed, and he feels responsible for her death and for giving her peace by eradicating the hunter and his bloodline. It’s taken him four centuries to hunt them all and now he’s down to the final hunter, but time is quickly running out for him.

What was it about the murder which caused such a reaction?
Aleksandr has a deep love for his sister and his brother, and was raised to be a protector of his people, a true prince. Seeing his sister’s guards all murdered and holding his sister as she died, unable to revive her and bring her back from death, had a great impact on him. It broke whatever restraint he had and he vowed vengeance on the hunter, not just to avenge his sister, but to protect his people from such a dangerous man.

Does Aleksandr acknowledge just how much of a beast he has become and does he forgive himself?
Yes, Aleksandr is aware from the start of the story that he’s losing himself to the darkness. It isn’t a case of forgiving himself. He’s not repentant about what he’s done and he knew the price he would pay when he set out on his mission. I don’t think he would do anything differently if offered the chance to do it all over again. He would still choose to avenge his sister and protect his vampire people. I don’t think he’s aware just how bad the corruption is until further into the story though and that’s when he discovers that his only hope for salvation is Elise.

Elise has nothing but her duty left - can you shed any light on her past which has led to where she is when the story starts?
Elise is a very loyal guard. She was raised by her parents and her father taught her everything that she knows. He was the former commander of the guard in her bloodline, the Cerny, in Prague. She followed in his footsteps and entered the guard at a very young age for a vampire and has spent the past two centuries serving her bloodline. She lost her father almost a decade ago and with her mother living away from the mansion, all she has to keep her going is her duty. She has a few friends within the guard, especially her captain, Andrej, but isn’t in a relationship with any of them. Since the loss of her father, she’s been even more committed to her duty, wanting to achieve the rank of commander as so many expect of her. It’s a lot to live up to.

Does Elise's master have anything to do with Aleksandr's quest?
Elise’s master, Ladislav, is quite intent on using Aleksandr’s presence in his mansion as an excuse to throw endless balls and shun his duties. He would do anything for Aleksandr, and Aleksandr uses that, gaining private quarters in the mansion and even Elise as one of his personal guards!

Where did you get your inspiration from for the setting of Heart of Darkness?
I’ve been to Prague in the past and it’s a place that has such a wonderful air about it. The architecture is steeped in history and the city feels old and perfect for vampires to me. I have several stories that are set in Prague. Two of the bloodlines in my Vampires Realm series that I write as F E Heaton live there. It’s a place I keep coming back to because it really does suit vampires in my mind. It’s an amazing city, very beautiful, old and charming, and it has really stayed with me.

How did you come to write paranormal romance?
I’ve always loved the paranormal genre since I was very young. I used to read books with vampires, werewolves, witches and Frankenstein’s monster in them when I was little in school or at home, and they were always my favourite. As I grew up, I progressed into reading the books they were all based on, like Dracula and Frankenstein, and lots of stories by H P Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe. I really liked gothic horror. I also loved fantasy novels, and classic romances by the likes of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Gaskell. I hadn’t read a paranormal romance before I first wrote one, and I hadn’t read any vampire romances before I started writing my Vampires Realm series. I think that’s why my series is so different to other ones and why it’s much darker than most. It’s more gothic and dark. The same goes for Heart of Darkness. I do write them blacker than midnight, full of emotion, and with plenty of passion.

Is it compulsory when you're writing to have a desk fan on....I know from reading your books that things can get verrrry steamy!!
I do actually have a USB mini fan on top of my computer tower! Things can get very hot in my books but more often than not it’s the depth of emotions and feelings I write into the books and their love scenes that makes them very hot indeed. I think a good love scene needs plenty of emotional spark and connection between the two characters. It has to be about more than a physical thing.

How many more books do you have planned ahead (or this/next year?) to look forward to?
Well, I’m trying to release less next year but I know that isn’t going to happen. I have Masquerade, the tenth book in my Vampires Realm series, coming out in January. In March I’ll start releasing my Vampire Erotic Theatre series, which comprises of four novellas. I’ll be releasing around one a month. Then I’m also planning to release Her Demonic Angel, the fifth book in my best selling Her Angel series, in summer. I have around another three novels I’ll be releasing next year too. I think I’m actually releasing more stories next year than I did this year! 2013 looks to be just as busy too. I think I’ll be releasing at least five novels a year for the foreseeable future.

If you had to choose would it be chocolate, crisps, or fruit?
Chocolate. I should say fruit, right? I can’t lie. I do love fruit, especially mango and kiwi and pineapple, but given the choice it has to be chocolate.

Heart of Darkness is currently available in e-book from my website, Amazon Kindle Stores, All Romance eBooks, and Smashwords. It will soon be available from Barnes & Noble, Apple iBookstore, Kobo Books and Sony. It will also soon be available in paperback from Amazon websites, Barnes and Noble, and other retailers.

Biography:
Felicity Heaton is a romance author writing as both Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton. She is passionate about penning paranormal tales full of vampires, witches, werewolves, angels and shape-shifters, and has been interested in all things preternatural and fantastical since she was just a child. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

Felicity Heaton Guest post (Blog Tour)

Interview with a Source Blood – Amber from Forbidden Blood

Firstly, thank you to Michelle for having me here today as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour. My latest release, Forbidden Blood, is a vampire romance novel and the first in my new Vampire Venators romance series. It’s a dark, sensual tale of betrayal, revenge and a love that knows no bounds.

Here’s a little bit about me and this series. I’m a paranormal romance / sci-fi romance author writing as Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton, and I have penned over forty stories since I started writing in 2005. Most of those are still available, either for purchase as e-books and paperbacks or as a free download.

Today I had the opportunity of interviewing Amber, the heroine from Forbidden Blood, and she provided some great answers to my questions about her, her vampire hero Kearn, and their story.

FH: I have Amber here today with me to talk about her book, FORBIDDEN BLOOD. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?

AMBER: I certainly can, I’m just not sure where to start. I’m human, for now, and I was just going through life like everyone else, not a clue about the fact that vampires are real... and that they aren’t the only supernatural species out there walking amongst us. I thought my life was going to be normal. I had a job, and was on the verge of moving to Paris to pursue my career when I met Kearn. I’m not saying that I prefer that life to the one I have now, just that I hadn’t expected to meet a vampire that night or to discover that I’m a Source Blood. That might sound crazy to people who don’t know what a Source Blood is. I’m human... but my lineage dates back thousands of years to a time when vampires were evolving. My ancestors broke away from them and remained human, but I share a gene with them. Because my bloodline didn’t evolve, that gene has remained pure. Now, if a vampire drinks my blood, they can gain anything between a nice buzz if they only take a little... and if they drink a lot... well, I’ve seen what happens, and it scares me. My blood can restore the same deteriorating gene in theirs, reawakening their godlike powers. It’s a frightening thing... both to know I carry the power to unleash the true powers of a vampire, and to know there are other women and men out there who share my blood... my family included. I want to warn them, but I’m not sure I can do it without sounding as though I’ve lost my mind. Kearn tells me that they’ll be monitored and the Venators and the Sovereignty will keep them safe, but I still worry about them, and the others like me out there.

FH: Can you tell us about what happened in your story?

AMBER: I was attacked in an alley because I had witnessed something I shouldn’t have. All I had done was see inside a factory courtyard where men were carrying heavy black sacks, and suddenly life as I knew it was over. Men attacked me, and a vampire fed me his blood... I thought I was going crazy but once you see fangs and you’ve tasted their blood... and can feel it inside you, controlling you against your will, then it’s hard to deny they exist. Kearn rescued me. Every day I thank God that Kearn was prowling the area in search of the very man who attacked me. When he took me back to his apartment and explained some things, and asked me to assist him, I couldn’t exactly say no. I knew the safest place for me was with him, and he was my only means of survival. The man wanted to taste my blood to discern whether I was a Source Blood and valuable to him as a blood slave, so he could harvest it and sell it to other vampires... he wasn’t going to stop until he had me, and I wasn’t about to leave Kearn’s side until Kearn had him instead. Everything turned mad after that... I found out what Kearn was... and the man upped his game, and I still have to live with the memories of what happened. Sometimes I still have nightmares.

FH: It must have been hard to deal with everything, especially discovering the existence of vampires and other demons, and also the discovery about your blood.

AMBER: It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Being told that I was different, and that the man after me wouldn’t stop until he had me... I still get shivers now. I was lucky that Kearn was there. I know he’s a vampire, but he’s so different to how I pictured them. He’s strong and steadfast, and he did everything to protect me. He sacrificed so much to keep me safe, and I love him all the more because of it. Vampires are as different to each other as humans are. Some of them, like Kearn, are good inside, even if they don’t realise it. Kearn helped me through everything. He supported me and I couldn’t have done it without him. I’m a strong woman, but there’s only so much I can deal with... and being told vampires exist, that Venators are there to hunt those who harm Source Bloods, and that I’m one of those special humans... it’s a lot to take in. I think I would have fallen apart without Kearn there to keep me together and give me something to focus on. It’s far easier to deal with something when your mind is on something far nicer... like making a vampire with a closed-off-heart open up and fall in love with you.

FH: Your relationship with Kearn is very complicated because your blood is forbidden and he’s not supposed to taste it. It must have been difficult for both of you at first, and not just because of the blood. There’s the vampire thing too.

AMBER: Yeah, the vampire thing and the blood thing were hard to work out at first. When I confronted him about the fact he was a vampire, not just a Venator, and I saw the effect my blood had on him, I wasn’t sure how to react. It’s like a drug to them. It unleashed a different side to him, released his inhibitions and his passion. It’s hard to be afraid of the fact a man, a vampire, has just tasted your blood when he’s pinning you to the side of his car and kissing the breath from you in the most delicious way. He was still the man I knew, the one who would do anything to protect me... but all the emotions he usually kept locked away were unleashed and there was actually a small part of me that really wanted him to take more blood from me. Not just that night either. I wanted him so much, against my better judgement, and every time he tasted my blood, we grew a little closer. He finds it hard to keep things hidden from me when my blood is inside him. I can feel his emotions, so I could sense his pain and turmoil, all the dark things he wanted to hide from me. Kearn has been through so much. It was impossible not to fall for him, especially when I found out the things he had endured with his family and his exile. When I learned about his past, I also realised why he kept his emotions on such a tight leash, and why there were times when he refused my blood... like when we were making love.

FH: How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?

AMBER: It’s been so much quieter since then, but I know that Kearn still feels a lot of pain over the events that happened in our story, and in his past. I think he has a long way to go before he can move past it all and let it go. He’s been even more attentive than usual, and I’m not going to say that I don’t enjoy it. When he’s not off on missions and we’re together, he scores top marks in the romance stakes... actually, he scores high when he’s away from me too. He calls me whenever he can to check in on me. I think he’s worried that his family aren’t treating me well when he’s not around, but they’re nice to me. He takes me with him on missions whenever he can, and says that it’s because he can’t bear to be apart from me, but I’m convinced it’s because he doesn’t want to leave me with his family. I’ve been working with some of the vampires to promote better treatment of humans amongst the species. It’s amazing the work you can do, and the attention you get from even the darkest of vampires when you have Archduke Pendragon on your side. He oversees all the vampires in Britain, and since he introduced me into society, everyone has been very pleasant to me, even at the balls when Kearn and I break the rules by dancing together.

FH: Your story, FORBIDDEN BLOOD, is a book in a series. Can you tell us a little about the series and can we expect see more of you in other stories in this series?

AMBER: Yes, it is part of a series, and I believe you’re writing about Kearn’s cousin Traegard Montagu next. I would love to read that book because in the few times I’ve met Traegard, he’s been colder than the Antarctic around me. I don’t think it’s a human thing either. I think it’s a woman thing. I’ve wanted to ask him about it so many times, but he’s so quick to make an exit if we’re left alone together. Traegard is a Venator too. Kearn says that he didn’t know that his cousin had been chosen until they met again at the Savernake mansion the night that Kearn defeated the man who was after me. I believe the series focuses on the Venators, doesn’t it, and in particular the vampires? Kearn has told me about Venators, and how they work for the Sovereignty and basically dish out punishment to every vampire who breaks the laws regarding Source Blood. He won’t tell me much about the place they call the “endless dark” which is where the souls of those sentenced by the power given to the Venators by the Sovereignty go. He closes up if I try to get him to talk about it, and says that I don’t want to know. I generally take that as a sign that I really don’t want to know. The vampires aren’t the only demon species that the Sovereignty governs. I’ve heard that there are angels, witches, werewolves and cat-shifters, and things called therianthropes... and even fairies! I haven’t met any of them yet, and Kearn says that I probably won’t as vampires don’t tend to associate with other species, but I overheard someone talking about cat-shifters at a ball recently, and apparently a pride of them has moved to the countryside near the Savernake and Montagu mansions, so I might get to meet some after all.

FH: Describe yourself in one word?

AMBER: Strong. I think it’s a requirement when dealing with a vampire fiancĂ© and the whole crazy world they live in.

FH: Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

AMBER: Thank you for having me here today and letting me ramble about Kearn. It feels good to talk to someone about everything and not have to worry that they’ll think I’ve gone round the bend. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone in other stories in the series. I’m sure any who read my story will be as interested in finding out how I turn out as the vampires I live with are!

ARC review of Love Immortal by Felicity Heaton

Title: Love Immortal
Author: Felicity Heaton
Publisher: Alinar Publishing
Published: Jan 2011
ASIN: B004HYHHME
Author's website: http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk/

Rating 4.5/5

I love the cover on this, dark and brooding with a hint of danger and lust.  Love Immortal is fairly fast paced.  Lauren the main character is unaware of her history and gets a rude awakening by being hunted by wolves.  She is saved by Julian, and the chemistry between them immediately sizzles.

I loved the storyline, and the mythology behind it. I'm pleased to say we have another red headed heroine (yeyy!!)  The emotions come across loud and clear in this book, from Lauren's disbelief as first, to utter shock once she realizes she is the target.  Lauren blossoms into a full blown butt kicking heroine - her journey to it is a wild ride which I enjoyed.  Lauren's relationship with Julian was great, although for me the shift in their relationship was too slow and drawn out.  I do like Julian though, a very strong character who goes out of his way to be with the person he loves, and manages to be a character of epic proportions who defies normal rules.

The relationships forged in the book are tangible, there's everything from deception (very very good, and I didn't expect it to happen that way!) to tender and true friendships.  I was drawn to Piper's youth and charisma, because of the emphasis on her innocence and true spirit I did get an idea of what was to come.

A thoroughly enjoyable non stop read, with a fantastic jaw dropping hunk of a male character as well as an enjoyable heroine. I enjoyed the interesting mix of mythology and incarnation alongside the x-men type characteristics of some of the cast.

My favorite quote from Love Immortal:
"She had never seen a man move with such agility or fight with such astounding grace."

Book synopsis:
When you're searching for your purpose, the last thing you expect to discover is that you're the latest reincarnation of a goddess on a three thousand year old mission to defeat the original werewolf, Lycaon, before he can gain revenge on Zeus and Olympus.

Rescued from the claws of werewolves by Julian, a handsome and mysterious immortal, Lauren is pulled into a dark and frightening new world full of monsters out to kill her and an organisation of people with phenomenal abilities who want to protect her—Ghost. But the most frightening thing of all is that soon Lauren will need to drink Julian's blood in order to reawaken and regain her immortal powers.

Or she will die.

Julian isn't about to let that happen. He's never met anyone like Lauren and he's determined not to lose her. She's the perfect copy of Illia but is nothing like her or any of the incarnations. She is light to their darkness, and she breathes life back into him, but can he trust her with his heart and bring himself to believe that the feelings she shows him are real after everything he has been through?

Can Lauren succeed in defeating Lycaon when all of her predecessors have failed? Will she be able to crack the armour around Julian's heart and seize her happily forever after with him?

Her Warrior Angel by Felicity Heaton

Title: Her Warrior Angel

I love the cover on this - it gives you a very visual insight into Einar, the angel warrior - drool!!  This is a book from the Her Angel series, and is the first book I've read from Felicity, each book can be read independently, which is a fantastic bonus.
From the outset we meet Taylor, the city's self designated protector.  Taylor is an interesting character.  Being half demon means any relationship between her and Einar is forbidden.  Both Taylor and Einar are torn and the scene is set for some sizzling fantastic reading. I enjoyed reading Taylor's indecision and justifications for her actions, whilst also getting insights from Einar about how he was feeling.  My favourite quote from Her Warrior Angel:

'She could sense his restraint as it mirrored hers, and his battle against his desire.  He wanted it too.'

I found the book to be a complete roller coaster of emotions.  I felt drawn in by the characters and their relationships.  The atmosphere between Taylor and Einar is very electrifying, hot and sexy.  Einar is enough to make most women weak at their knees, and he's so sweet and strong with it too.  He contradicts some of the ideas I had of an angel, but in a good way.  He realizes that he's never been truly happy, and his future changes because of it.

I loved Vilandry's character and both the way his history with Taylor is shown and Einar's reaction to this knowledge - it made an engrossing read.  (Vilandry being one of Taylor's ex-lovers, who happens to be a vampire).
A whole spectrum of emotions were evoked from the pages.  If it was much hotter, I would have needed to plug my electric fan in *phew!* Raw emotions, from wanting to kiss Einar for being so sweet, to being completely shocked at some of the actions that led to the ending, by which time I was almost in tears. I certainly didn't see the way Einar's future led!

I'm really pleased I read this, and am looking forward to reading more books by Felicity Heaton, who has now gone on my permanent author list :)

Book Synopsis:
'Einar is one of Heaven’s best hunters and he’s on a mission to uncover why an angel was working with demons. When he finds the first demon fighting a beautiful woman named Taylor, he intervenes and saves her life. Taylor has spent her whole life protecting London from the lowest demons and she’s not about to let an angel waltz into her city and take over her job, and she’s certainly not about to fall in love with him, even if he is gorgeous. The reason why she can’t is simple—she’s half demon.

There is no love in this world more forbidden than that between an angel and a demon.

Sense tells Taylor to get out before she gets her heart broken, but she winds up convincing Einar to partner with her instead. Einar is certain that working with Taylor is a bad idea, and not only because he can’t focus when he’s around her, but he can’t let her go. The mission leads them deep into the city’s underworld, where old flames burn Taylor while new flames of passion and fear of the consequences consume them, and the threat of Einar’s demons hangs over them both.

Can a love so forbidden ever have a happy ending or are they destined to break each other’s hearts?
