Scary Mary by S.A.Hunter

Title: Scary Mary

The cover on this doesn’t give too much away- other than the defiant look from a character that I think represents Mary well.

Mary can hear ghosts, and her grandmother is a fortune teller, so Mary comes from a family with history.  Problem is, no one but her grandma and her best friend Rachel, believe her.  Mary is misunderstood, made fun of and made to look like a freak by most of her school peers.  Even the teachers scorn her and don’t take her seriously.

I felt a really good connection with Mary – we get to know her fairly well.  The book is fairly small I thought, but it’s completely absorbing and packed with action and emotional happenings all the way through.  I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I am glad Mary has a good friend in Rachel otherwise her life would be unbearable.

Mary goes out of her way to help one of her peers when he takes an interest to her – will she make another friend or alienate another person who can’t understand what she’s about?

Book synopsis:
Mary just wants to be left alone, but the cheerleaders, jocks, and ghosts won't stop harrassing her. When new student Cyrus starts school, he tries to befriend her. That's a rare thing for the school freak, but her unusual abilities put a rift in their budding friendship when she has to tell him that his home is haunted and not by Casper, the friendly ghost.
